The Non-Vocational Developmental Support Worker (DSW) Certificate Program provides learners with foundational knowledge and essential skills to support individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities in community and care settings.

Building Skills for Respectful Behavioural Support

GPA equips learners with practical strategies for understanding the emotional, psychological and environmental factors that influence behaviour, particularly in individuals living with dementia, cognitive impairment, or heightened distress.  The core philosophy of GPA is to protect dignity, promote safety, and support positive interactions without force or confrontation

The Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) course focuses on respectful, compassionate strategies for supporting individuals who display responsive or challenging behaviors, particularly those living with cognitive impairment, dementia, or emotional distress.

This course teaches learners how to interpret behavior as communication, use empathy-based responses, and apply gentle, non-coercive techniques to reduce risk and enhance safety. Emphasis is placed on dignity, relationship-building, and preventing escalation through understanding and emotional intelligence.

GPA is suitable for caregivers, support workers, healthcare aides, volunteers, and family members.
